Alaska's wild landscapes provide healthy habitat for bears, with more bears living in Alaska than any other state. The easiest (and safest) way to view bears in the wild is on a guided tour by small plane or boat that lands you and your expert guides in remote areas where bears congregate - usually near rivers or tidal flats where bears gather to feed on fish. Human behavior in these bear viewing areas is strictly controlled, with the goal of making you part of the scenery and letting the bears go about their business undisturbed.
Many tour options are available to view Alaska’s brown bears and black bears in the Inside Passage, Southcentral, Interior, and Southwest regions of Alaska. Some of the most popular bear viewing tours depart from communities such as Anchorage, Kodiak, Homer, and Juneau, visiting top bear viewing destinations like Brooks Falls at Katmai National Park, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Clark National Park, Denali National Park, and Pack Creek Bear Viewing Area. All the bear shots I’ve collected over the years—from stealthy black bears emerging through emerald forest undergrowth, to mountain-side grizzlies searching for a quick dandelion snack in golden hour light—remind me how each moment in the wild is pure magic. Whether it’s the tiny fierceness of a cub battling with its sibling or the quiet stirring of leaves revealing a massive grizzly, these photos are a tribute to patience, wild curiosity, and the slow dance of light and life.
Here’s the wild good news: bear numbers across North America are on the rise, thanks to decades of work. Grizzly bears in the lower‑48 have climbed from just a few hundred in the 1970s to nearly 2,000 today, with thriving populations in hotspot ecosystems like Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Continental Divide. Meanwhile, North America’s black bears have bounced back to occupy about 60 % of their former range. And here’s a fun twist: the “Fat Bear Week” event in Alaska turns the annual hibernation prep into a global celebration—these portly giants can eat up to 120 lbs of salmon in a single day to ready themselves for winter!

Winner of the last two Fat Bear Week competitions, Grazer is packing on the pounds again in 2025. She still has a second year cub with her who shares some of the catches, but Mama Bear seems to be getting her share of the salmon.

I’ve been to this park 3 times and I fall in love more each time! Located just over 2 hours from Anchorage, it’s certainly one of the most accessible Alaska national parks.
While it’s easy to drive to, the vast majority of the park is only accessed from the water, so you’ll definitely want to hop on a boat while you’re there!
Here is a mini-guide to visiting Kenai Fjords 👇
Make sure to leave no trace - pack out all of your trash, come prepared (carry bear spray for the Harding Icefield trail), and never feed or approach wildlife.
🥾Hike to Exit Glacier (2.2 miles), and/or up to the Harding Icefield (8.6 miles with a lot of elevation gain) if you’re up for a challenge
🛶Take a kayaking tour with kayakadventuresworldwide and get up close and personal with a glacier!
⛴️Take a wildlife cruise with majormarinetours and look for whales, otters, sea lions, puffins and more!
