Top Things to Do in Juneau in Winter
Alaska’s state capital – Juneau – is nestled between the waters of the Gastineau Channel and mountains that rise right from the edge of town. This vibrant city is known as a top summer destination in Alaska and one of the most popular cruise stops. However, when the snow falls, Juneau transforms into a winter wonderland, with downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, glacier viewing, and plenty of cultural activities when you’re ready to warm up. Interested in experiencing Juneau without the hustle and bustle of the busy summer season? Here are the top things to do in Juneau in winter:
Skiing
Juneau is home to the second largest ski resort in Alaska, Eaglecrest Ski Area. The area’s 640 acres and 36 marked trails are accessible by 4 chair lifts. While cruising the 1,620-foot vertical drop, skiers and snowboarders are treated to stunning panoramic ocean views. There’s terrain for all skill levels, including open boundaries to access to some incredible backcountry skiing. Other perks of Eaglecrest include short lift lines, mild temperatures, and cheap lift tickets. Nordic skiers will enjoy 10k of groomed ski trails below the downhill area. Eaglecrest is typically open early December through early April.
Mendenhall Glacier
One of the main attractions in Juneau in summer is Mendenhall Glacier. In winter, Mendenhall Lake freezes and the trees and mountains are blanketed in white, creating ample outdoor recreation opportunities and new vantage points for viewing the glacier. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is open in winter with reduced hours – be sure to check their website for current hours. There are no area fees in winter and the walking trails are open year-round. Once the lake is frozen, it’s a popular destination for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and walking. Trails at the nearby Mendenhall Campground are groomed for cross country skiing. You can rent cross country skis at Eaglecrest and an outdoor gear outfitter in town.
Please note that it’s not safe to travel on the lake until the ice is thick enough, and you should not get too close to the face of the glacier due to unstable ice conditions. Be sure to check in at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center to inquire about lake ice conditions.
Explore Downtown
In addition to a variety of restaurants and shops, downtown Juneau is a treasure trove of historical sites, sculptures, statues, public art, and so much more. Dress for the weather and embark on a self-guided walking tour of downtown. Don’t miss the Whale Sculpture (also known as the Whale Project), an incredible life-size bronze sculpture of a humpback whale breaching from the water. Another highlight is the Totem Pole Trail, a series of totem poles located along the Juneau waterfront carved by Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian artists. Museums
Winter or summer, Juneau’s museums are not-to-be-missed. For a rich and immersive look at state history through permanent and rotating exhibits, visit the Alaska State Museum. Dive deeper into local Juneau history and culture at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Learn more about Alaska Native culture and view the state’s largest collection of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian art at the Sealaska Heritage Institute. The stunning monumental artwork and totem in front of the building are reason enough to visit this beautiful cultural center.
Culinary Scene
After you’ve worked up an appetite from your winter adventures, it’s time to experience Juneau’s fun and modern culinary scene, highlighting one of the state’s top delicacies: fresh Alaska seafood. You’ll find fine dining, lively pubs, casual cafes, cozy coffee shops, and more. Juneau is also home to a vibrant brewery scene, with several breweries (including one of the oldest in the state – Alaska Brewing Company) and a distillery serving up locally-made spirits.
Whether you’re looking for amazing winter recreation, vibrant culture, delicious food, or a little bit of everything, be sure to add Juneau to your list of top winter destinations to visit in Alaska. And, with year-round direct flights to Juneau from Seattle, it’s easy to get to Juneau, no matter the season.
