Hiking & Outdoor Recreation

With over 322 million acres of public lands and varied landscapes including the 10 tallest mountains in the United States (and the tallest mountain in North America - Denali), tundra, rugged coastline, glaciers, boreal forest, and temperate rainforest, the list of ways to experience Alaska's outdoor recreation is about as massive as the backcountry itself. Alaska has some of the grandest, most awe-inspiring scenery, and it is one of the top destinations in the world for outdoor recreation including hiking, backpacking, glacier trekking, and biking.

You have two options for embarking on an outdoor adventure in Alaska: join a guided trip or explore independently. Guided trips are ideal for those who would like some local expertise — whether you’re new to hiking and camping or you’re a seasoned outdoor adventurer looking to explore remote backcountry destinations. Tour operators offer guided outdoor trips for all abilities, all seasons, and a wide variety of trip lengths, from hiking day trips to guided bike trips to glacier treks to multi-day backcountry trips

Independent travelers will find endless opportunities for hiking and outdoor recreation. Hikers will find amazing trail systems winding through most major communities and within our vast network national parks and public lands. Alaska has a trail for everyone, from accessible nature paths to challenging mountain hikes leading to breathtaking vistas.
