All the bear shots I’ve collected over the years—from stealthy black bears emerging through emerald forest undergrowth, to mountain-side grizzlies searching for a quick dandelion snack in golden hour light—remind me how each moment in the wild is pure magic. Whether it’s the tiny fierceness of a cub battling with its sibling or the quiet stirring of leaves revealing a massive grizzly, these photos are a tribute to patience, wild curiosity, and the slow dance of light and life.
Here’s the wild good news: bear numbers across North America are on the rise, thanks to decades of work. Grizzly bears in the lower‑48 have climbed from just a few hundred in the 1970s to nearly 2,000 today, with thriving populations in hotspot ecosystems like Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Continental Divide. Meanwhile, North America’s black bears have bounced back to occupy about 60 % of their former range. And here’s a fun twist: the “Fat Bear Week” event in Alaska turns the annual hibernation prep into a global celebration—these portly giants can eat up to 120 lbs of salmon in a single day to ready themselves for winter!

I’ve never before photographed the velvet coming off moose antlers, but my timing in Denali Park was perfect to witness this event. It only takes a day or two to scrape off the velvet and when it’s off, these giants are ready to rumble!
