If you make the drive to Alaska, there’s no doubt Denali is one of your planned stops. Here are some things we enjoyed in the park, as well as just before and after it:
🐾 SLED DOGS! Take the bus from the visitors center to meet the Dean Sled Dogs. You can pet them, learn all about their breeding and purpose in the park – they have serious work here – and see a demo of them in action. It was easily our favorite thing we did in Denali!
🏔️ AMAZING VIEWS. Everywhere. Any random pull-off along the Denali Highway will reward you with dreamy photo opps. And if you’re luckier than we were, you’ll get a view of Denali herself. In our case, she was hiding behind clouds (slide 6), but it was still a pretty fantastic view.
🤣 ADULT HUMOR. We definitely did a double take when we drove past this business on our way out of Fairbanks. Then after getting over our childish fits of laughter, we pulled a U-turn and doubled back so we could get a photo of the sign. I mean, we HAD TO share it!
🍕 TALKEETNA. Just a short drive south of Denali National Park is the town of Talkeetna. This cute little touristy town is a must-stop on your way down to Anchorage. Not just for the potential views of Denali from the beach there, but really for the FOOD. There are several great places to choose from, from pizza to a brewery, but our fave was the Spinach Bread truck. And check out the local flair on the menu at the taco place.

Last year, just before the snow came, I had the opportunity to take on an amazing assignment. It was a collaboration between Travel Alaska and natgeotravel, where we explored how travelers could experience Indigenous culture in southeast Alaska through local businesses and art. For two weeks, tlingit.witch and I visited some of our favorite local businesses, scenic locations and got to meet some amazing artists we admire.
During the initial stages of planning for this project with my colleague melissatwiley, the first person I suggested as a collaborator was Rochelle Smallwood, a Tlingit artist and visual storyteller based in Juneau (also known as tlingit.witch / K̲aachgóon). Rochelle brings a lot of energy, creativity, and a touch of whimsy to her projects. Her love for art and the Indigenous community is truly inspiring. If Rochelle hadn’t been on the team, I wouldn’t have felt as confident as I did going into this project. I miss our long drives around Juneau and Sitka, exploring in our tiny rental car, discussing art and listening to music. I look forward to whatever our next collaboration may be!

🏔️ AMAZING VIEWS. Everywhere. Any random pull-off along the Denali Highway will reward you with dreamy photo opps. And if you’re luckier than we were, you’ll get a view of Denali herself. In our case, she was hiding behind clouds (slide 6), but it was still a pretty fantastic view.
🤣 ADULT HUMOR. We definitely did a double take when we drove past this business on our way out of Fairbanks. Then after getting over our childish fits of laughter, we pulled a U-turn and doubled back so we could get a photo of the sign. I mean, we HAD TO share it!
🍕 TALKEETNA. Just a short drive south of Denali National Park is the town of Talkeetna. This cute little touristy town is a must-stop on your way down to Anchorage. Not just for the potential views of Denali from the beach there, but really for the FOOD. There are several great places to choose from, from pizza to a brewery, but our fave was the Spinach Bread truck. And check out the local flair on the menu at the taco place.
I had the absolute pleasure of working with Mungnak brianadamsphotography on a project highlighting Indigenous artists in Lingít Aaní over the fall. Last year, just before the snow came, I had the opportunity to take on an amazing assignment. It was a collaboration between Travel Alaska and natgeotravel, where we explored how travelers could experience Indigenous culture in southeast Alaska through local businesses and art. For two weeks, tlingit.witch and I visited some of our favorite local businesses, scenic locations and got to meet some amazing artists we admire.
During the initial stages of planning for this project with my colleague melissatwiley, the first person I suggested as a collaborator was Rochelle Smallwood, a Tlingit artist and visual storyteller based in Juneau (also known as tlingit.witch / K̲aachgóon). Rochelle brings a lot of energy, creativity, and a touch of whimsy to her projects. Her love for art and the Indigenous community is truly inspiring. If Rochelle hadn’t been on the team, I wouldn’t have felt as confident as I did going into this project. I miss our long drives around Juneau and Sitka, exploring in our tiny rental car, discussing art and listening to music. I look forward to whatever our next collaboration may be!

If you make the drive to Alaska, there’s no doubt Denali is one of your planned stops. Here are some things we enjoyed in the park, as well as just before and after it:
🐾 SLED DOGS! Take the bus from the visitors center to meet the Dean Sled Dogs. You can pet them, learn all about their breeding and purpose in the park – they have serious work here – and see a demo of them in action. It was easily our favorite thing we did in Denali!
