17 Reasons to Drive North in 2024
This is your sign to make the drive through western Canada to Alaska in 2024! With an abundance of new lodges, tours, and cultural experiences all waiting for you, there’s no reason to put this epic road trip off another year.
Whether you’re planning a family road trip or a solo trek, there are several routes and endless adventures that offer just what you’re looking for. Choose from the Inside Passage, Gold Rush, or Rockies routes through Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon, and Alaska.

Alaska
Known as the Great Land, Alaska is chock-full of new and exciting experiences to indulge in during your travels. Regardless of which route you take into Alaska (by ferry or road), there are more than enough opportunities to explore something new in this upcoming year.
- Susitna Adventure Lodge is a renovated, historical roadhouse located on the Denali Highway that will be open in 2024. Owned by two professional dog mushers, the lodge will specialize in outdoor experiences such as dog mushing, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and more.
- Coming in April 2024, BlueWater BaseCamp is a new lodging option based in Eklutna Valley that specializes in accessibility to the outdoors with the comforts of home. With eight different cabins on the property, all buildings on the campus are accessible for those experiencing disabilities and the lodge also offers accessible equipment such as grit chairs and safety sleepers.
- New tours are available if you’re traveling by ferry through Juneau. Juneau Food Tours is partnering with new operator Breathe Alaska on a 3.5-hour tour including a 90-minute mindfulness and meditation session in the Tongass National Forest and a meal. Wild Coast Excursions will be taking travelers on guided bear viewing and hiking excursions in the region.
- Another ferry stop, Sitka, also has two new water-based tours. Sitka Jet Ski Rentals provides guests with a thrilling way to explore Sitka Sound for sights of whales, bears, otters, and more on jet skis. Selkie Snorkels offers a three-hour snorkel tour through underwater kelp forests of Southeast Alaska and a different perspective altogether.

The Yukon
As an area that’s known for its historical sites and jaw-dropping scenery, it’s hard to imagine the Yukon having even more to offer in the new year. With an expansion of its wildlife viewings and reopening of crowd favorites, you’re not going to want to miss what the Yukon has in store for 2024.
- If you’ve been on the road for multiple days in a row, Eclipse Nordic Hot Springs, north of Whitehorse, is now a must visit, offering a mix of different hot pools, relaxation rooms, saunas, and steam rooms.
- After being closed for three years, the MacBride Copperbelt Mining Museum also in Whitehorse, is reopened. Located off the Alaska Highway, the museum is ideal for families and offers a unique ride on “Loki” the in-museum locomotive.
- For those further driving further afield to Dawson City, Peel Wilderness Adventures offers the chance to see the Klondike via flightseeing tours.
- A new accommodation offering in the Kluane National Park & Reserve, Flying Squirrel Cabins, offers Alaska-bound travelers a chance to stop, unwind and explore a stunning area of the Yukon.

British Columbia
New hotels, tour operators and attractions in Vancouver, Haida Gwai, Revelstoke, and Golden have brought even more attention to British Columbia in recent years, making it an ideal place to start your drive north. Here are just a few that keep us coming back for more.
- While Vancouver is now home to eight Michelin-starred restaurants, the new Salmon n’ Bannock restaurant’s newest outpost in the Vancouver International Airport is a must for trying Indigenous foods of the region.
- While Liard River Hot Springs has always drawn those looking to warm up and soothe muscles north, Vancouver Island is offering a few newer places to relax! Head to Comox Lake to try Nomadic Sauna’s mobile sauna services, or Ritual Nordic Spa in downtown Victoria.
- Salishan Place by the River, a new arts, culture and heritage facility is being developed in Fort Langley. The three-story building will share and celebrate the voices and stories of community members, encouraging interactive and inclusive experiences for visitors of all ages. It will also feature Indigenous and community galleries, program spaces, and community archives.
- Between Revelstoke and Golden, Heather Mountain Lodge is offering a multi-day “Being Bear” grizzly habitat exploration in Glacier National Park for those who are fascinated by the mammals.
