Railroad Day Trips
Alaska train trips are favorites of locals and visitors alike. Some trains offer glass-domed cars that give panoramic views of mountains, forests, and glaciers rolling by, or historic engines and cars that use refurbished equipment from the Gold Rush era. Local tour guides travel with the cars to narrate the trip, explaining local history, pointing out wildlife, and answering any questions you may have. Keep your eye out for special occasion trains that pair activities like skiing, Halloween costumes, blues music and — believe it or not — polka dancing with a scenic train ride. You can also add side excursions, like glacier hiking, rafting, or day cruises, to some of the train trips.
