Wrangell is located at the mouth of the Stikine River, the largest river bisecting the Coast Mountains linking Southeast Alaska to interior Canada. The river and delta, as well as Wrangell Island and surrounding pristine habitat are critical stopovers for migrating birds on the Pacific Flyway. The area supports a diversity of habitats ranging from open ocean and rocky beaches to temperate rainforest and boggy muskeg providing excellent year round birding opportunities. Wrangell is easy to explore by foot, bike, and paddlecraft with good birding sites close to town. Local outfitters provide transportation to cabins and key viewing areas in remote bays, rocky island shorelines, and tidal flats. Join us each Spring for the Stikine River Birding Festival to celebrate the diversity of birds.
