What better window into a community than its food? Most of Alaska's major cities offer culinary tours that give you a tasty window into local culture and creativity. Some tours include tastings of Alaska-raised meats like elk, yak, bison, and reindeer (domesticated caribou), along with produce from local farmers. And of course, there's always plenty of fresh seafood just off the boat, including salmon, halibut, rockfish, and crab.

If you don't feel like taking a tour, Alaska also boasts a number of world-class chefs that offer cooking classes, and local businesses that sell Alaska grown products like birch syrup, jam, and smoked salmon so you can bring a taste of Alaska back home. Alaska also has a thriving local brewery scene, along with wineries and distilleries, and most offer tours that include a sampling of their products.
