I’ve been to this park 3 times and I fall in love more each time! Located just over 2 hours from Anchorage, it’s certainly one of the most accessible Alaska national parks.
While it’s easy to drive to, the vast majority of the park is only accessed from the water, so you’ll definitely want to hop on a boat while you’re there!

Katmai National Park in Alaska is quickly becoming a bucket list destination for wildlife lovers. Known for its stunning landscapes and incredible wildlife, the park offers amazing opportunities to see bears up close, especially at Brooks Falls, where they fish for salmon to bulk up before hibernation. From mid-July to September, these bears are in full hunter mode, making it the perfect time to catch them in action. Later in the year, locals even celebrate their biggest residents during Fat Bears’ Week, where they show off just how ready they are for hibernation!
For a true Alaskan adventure, stay at Tutka Bay Lodge, where you can enjoy whale watching, kayaking and hiking. There are also plenty of cruise options that’ll get you to the park as well.

Another great bike ride today to Wrangle- St Elias National Park. Tess dominated a pretty serious hill and about 30 more miles. Now Canoeing… Ehhh we were both average at best, pretty good at beaching it on sandbars.
