Tok Area State Recreation Sites
When crossing over the U.S.-Canadian border on the Alaska Highway, these state recreation sites offer welcome respite from the road.
Located only 92 miles west of the Canada border, Tok serves as the gateway to Alaska for travelers driving the Alaska Highway. The community is often the first Alaska town travelers stop at after that lengthy drive along the Alaska Highway and gives them their first opportunity to explore the Alaska Range. Tok is a 3.5 hour drive from Fairbanks and 6 hour drive from Anchorage.
Surrounding Tok are three state recreation sites where travelers can enjoy camping, picnicking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Migrating sandhill cranes and trumpeter swans are especially popular among bird enthusiasts. Moose can often be seen grazing in the area.
EAGLE TRAIL STATE RECREATION SITE
Eagle Trail State Recreation Site is the largest site at 280 acres. Located 16 miles south of Tok on the Tok Cut-Off Highway, the park includes portions of the Old Slana Highway, the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telephone System, and the Valdez-Eagle Trail. The campground has 35 campsites and is popular with visitors traveling between Tok and Glennallen on the Richardson Highway. Other facilities include picnic shelters and hiking trails, including a one mile nature trail and a 2.5 mile hiking trail with views of the Tok River Valley.
MOON LAKE STATE RECREATION SITE
Moon Lake State Recreation Site is 15 miles northwest of Tok along the Alaska Highway. The 22-acre park is a popular destination for boating and swimming. Facilities at Moon Lake State Recreation Site include a 15-site campground, picnic areas, and a boat launch.
TOK RIVER STATE RECREATION SITE
Tok River State Recreation Site is 4.5 miles east of Tok along the Alaska Highway. Located along the banks of the Tok River, the 38-acre park provides camping, hiking, and access to float trip opportunities. Tok River State Recreation Site features 27 campsites, picnic shelters, a walking trial, and access to Tok River.
GETTING HERE
All three recreation sites are accessible by road. Eagle Trail State Recreation Site is at Mile 109.5 of the Tok Cut-Off Highway. Moon Lake State Recreation Site is near Mile 1332 of the Alaska Highway. Tok River State Recreation Site is at Mile 1309 of the Alaska Highway.

Although I wasn't able to visit the
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve as much & intensive as I was willing to, I still have been able to see the impressive mountains of the Wrangell-St. Elias Range though 😊
Since when you're driving the Richardson Highway from Tok to Valdez, you're having a stretch, mostly around Glennallen, where you're constantly seeing these beautiful & cool mountains alongside the Richardson Hwy 😊

🇺🇸We made it to Alaska on the Historic Alaska Highway and crossed the border from the Yukon Territory into the U.S.—and it only cost us 2 potatoes, 2 tomatoes, and 4 limes! No, we didn’t barter our way into the U.S.—our produce was confiscated by the inspectors at the border. So, tonight we’ll have potato/tomato-less lentil soup and no Caipirinhas (a famous Brazilian drink) to share with new acquaintances until we can find a grocery store. ☹️😄

🇧🇷Chegamos ao Alasca pela histórica rodovia Alaska Highway e cruzamos a fronteira do território de Yukon no Canadá para EUA, e isso só nos custou 2 batatas, 2 tomates e 4 limões! Não, nós não fizemos barganha para entrar nos Estados Unidos... nossos legumes foram confiscados pelos inspetores da fronteira. Então, hoje à noite teremos sopa de lentilha sem batata e sem tomates e nada de Caipirinha pra compartilhar com novos amigos até encontramos um supermercado. ☹️😄

🇺🇸The Alaska Highway is full of surprises, and one of the best surprises for us was meeting filipemasetti (Brazilian) and claradavel (Argentinian) and Filipe’s two horses, Mac and Smokey. Even more surprising is that Filipe is completing the last leg of his journey—riding a horse between Ushuaia, on the southern tip of Argentina, and Alaska! To make things more interesting, the horses are both mustangs, raised in a wild herd, and Felipe broke Smokey for riding just two weeks before starting this leg of the journey. Clara, an Environmental Management major, cares for the horses and drives the support vehicle on this leg. . 🇧🇷A rodovia do Alasca é cheia de surpresas, e uma das melhores surpresas pra nós foi encontrar filipemasetti (Brasileiro) e claradavel (Argentina) e os dois cavalos de Filipe, Mac e Smokey. Ainda mais surpreendente é que Filipe está completando a última etapa de sua jornada a cavalo de Ushuaia, ponta sul da Argentina até o Alaska! Para tornar as coisas mais interessantes, os cavalos são dois mustangs, criados em um rebanho selvagem e Filipe domou Smokey em apenas duas semanas antes de começar esta etapa da jornada. Clara, estudante de Gestão Ambiental cuida dos cavalos e dirige o veículo de apoio nesta etapa. Alaska - Wrangell Mountain Range - 21/09/2023
Although I wasn't able to visit the
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve as much & intensive as I was willing to, I still have been able to see the impressive mountains of the Wrangell-St. Elias Range though 😊
Since when you're driving the Richardson Highway from Tok to Valdez, you're having a stretch, mostly around Glennallen, where you're constantly seeing these beautiful & cool mountains alongside the Richardson Hwy 😊
"The Wrangell Mountains are a high mountain range of eastern Alaska in the US.
The Mountains are almost entirely volcanic in origin, and they include the 2nd and 3rd highest volcanoes in the US, Mt Blackburn and Mt Sanford.
The range takes its name from Mt Wrangell, which is one of the largest andesite shield volcanoes in the world, and also the only presently active volcano in the range. The Wrangell Mountains comprise most of the Wrangell Volcanic Field, which also extends into the neighboring St Elias Mountains and the Yukon Territory in Canada.
Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve is often called “the mountain kingdom of North America,” as the Chugach, Wrangell, and St. Elias Mountain Ranges converge in an area the size of six Yellowstone National Parks. The St. Elias Range merges with the Wrangells in the heart of the park and then arcs eastward past the Canadian border, where it forms the highest coastal range in the world.
Within the park's borders are nine of the sixteen highest peaks in the country, including the 2nd highest, Mt St. Elias at 18,008 ft, Mt Bona at 16,421 ft, Mt Blackburn at 16,390 ft, and Mt Sanford at 16,237 ft. From its glaciated roof of mountains and peaks, the park's terrain descends to the north as treeless tundra and then boreal-forested uplands. To the south, the glaciers extend from the mountains almost to the tidewaters of the Gulf of Alaska."

Alaska has exceeded expectations. Stunning scenery, great roads to ride, nice camp spots, low traffic and really nice people! Took 90 mile detour by bus into Denali National Park to get some amazing views of the mountain. Made it to Fairbanks on august 2nd for my first rest days after 370 miles riding. Heading out further into the interior of Alaska to Tok tomorrow then to Valdez by August 13th
