Skiing & Snowboarding

Girdwood’s Alyeska Resort is the largest downhill ski and snowboard resort in Alaska, featuring 1,610 skiable acres. Other destinations include Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau, Hilltop Ski Area and Arctic Valley in Anchorage, Skeetawk in Hatcher Pass, and Skiland and Moose Mountain in Fairbanks. Those that prefer backcountry skiing enjoy terrain at Thompson Pass near ValdezHatcher Pass near Palmer, and the Kenai Peninsula’s Turnagain Pass.

Cross country skiing is easily accessible in many Alaska communities, whether it is on groomed trails or trackless mountainsides. Anchorage’s Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Kincaid Park are both popular, offering miles of scenic, groomed trails, along with some lighted trails at Kincaid. Cross country skiers in Fairbanks can enjoy Birch Hill Recreation Area and the University of Alaska Fairbanks Trail System. Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau also offers groomed trails for both cross-country and skate skiing.
