Aleutian Islands
Sweeping westward 1,200 miles from the Alaska Peninsula, the Aleutian Islands are one world’s most beautiful, dramatic regions. Here, nestled among active volcanoes, sea-sculpted coastline, and mile-after-mile of rugged, wind-swept landscape, the adventurous traveler can explore ancient Alaska Native village sites, visit agate beaches, view an array of wildlife, or enjoy unparalleled fishing opportunities.
The Unangax̂ people have been living in the area for over 3,000 years. Several communities are located along the Aleutian Islands, including Akutan, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Sand Point, Unalaska, and Adak. These communities share a common heritage and reliance on the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea, but each holds its own unique charms. Unalaska/Dutch Harbor is the largest community in the Aleutian Islands, home to about 4,700 residents plus World War II history at the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area, Russian history, and excellent fishing, hiking, and birding.
