Inside Passage Southern Region
For visitors traveling to Alaska on a cruise ship, the southern region of the Inside Passage provides their first glimpse of the state’s beauty. Ketchikan serves as the southernmost port of call for the majority of Inside Passage cruises. A major center for sport fishing, opportunities abound in Ketchikan for both saltwater and freshwater fishing. Visitors can view an impressive collection of totem poles at Totem Bight State Historical Park just outside of town, glimpse Ketchikan’s colorful history on Creek Street in downtown, and view wildlife and unique coastal scenery by boat in Misty Fjords National Monument.
Ketchikan is the main port of call for large cruise ships in the Inside Passage’s southern region, while Petersburg and Wrangell are popular stops for small cruise ships. More remote communities in the area can be reached by water taxi, air taxi, and ferry service on the Alaska Marine Highway system.
