Bettles

Despite its status as the smallest incorporated city in Alaska, Bettles is the gateway to big expeditions in four national parks and public lands, not to mention phenomenal winter adventures.

Bettles is about 180 air miles northwest of Fairbanks and is located on the southeast bank of the Koyukuk River. Bettles/Evansville consists of two villages with about 80 residents and is the major departure point for Gates of the Arctic National Park, Kobuk Valley National Park, Noatak National Preserve, Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge, as well as the Central Brooks Range.

Bettles is known for its wilderness lodges and camps specializing in hiking, fishing, northern lights viewing, and other adventure tour packages. Travelers can expect experienced Alaska guides and outfitters. Independent hikers and anglers can seek out the ranger station just beyond the airstrip at Bettles for Gates of the Arctic National Park and Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge information. The ranger station is open daily in summer with information and resources relating to the park.
