Anchorage Area

Anchorage Area

Alaska’s largest city, home to about 300,000 residents, Anchorage is a popular year-round destination and center of commerce for the region. Luxury hotels, fine cuisine, and shopping are only minutes from state parks, an extensive paved bike path system, and many historical sites and museums. Views of the Chugach Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the Anchorage area and offer great opportunities for hiking, backpacking, camping, and winter activities.

Within about an hour of Anchorage are communities and parks that offer access to even more Alaska adventures. North of Anchorage, visitors will find the Alaska Native village of Eklutna, kayaking and biking opportunities at Eklutna Lake State Recreation Area, and hiking at Eagle River Nature Center near the town of Eagle River. On the south end of Anchorage, wildlife enthusiast can view birds and other wildlife from the raised platforms at Potter Marsh. The town of Girdwood offers opportunities for hiking and biking in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter at Alyeska Resort. Visitors can get up-close views of glaciers at the easily-accessible Portage Glacier area.
