Inside Passage Northern Region
The northern region of the Inside Passage is home to Juneau, Alaska’s state capital, and other cruise ship ports of call including Skagway, Sitka, and Hoonah/Icy Strait Point. The area is known for its Tlingit and Haida culture, Russian heritage, whale watching and wildlife viewing, salmon and halibut fishing, glaciers, and outdoor recreation opportunities in the many state parks, wildlife refuges, and the expansive Tongass National Forest. The town of Skagway, bustling in the summer months with cruise ship activity, is known for its colorful gold rush history and the famous White Pass & Yukon Railroad and Chilkoot Trail.
In Sitka, the Russian capital of Alaska from 1808 to 1867, the New Archangel Dancers keep the Russian spirit alive. Visitors can view Alaska Native artifacts at Sheldon Jackson Museum, totem poles and a cultural center at Sitka National Historical Park, and get up-close view of eagles and other birds at the Alaska Raptor Center. Juneau is known for its lively downtown, easily accessible glacier viewing at Mendenhall Glacier, whale watching, great hiking trails, and vibrant culinary scene.
Cruise ships aren’t the only way to explore this area. Juneau is home to the Juneau International Airport, with daily flights from destinations in Alaska and the Lower 48, making it an easy to reach destination. Most northern Inside Passage communities are along the Alaska Marine Highway ferry route and are also accessible by smaller regional air carriers and air taxis. The towns of Haines and Skagway are accessible by road, though you have to drive through Canada to reach them.
