Northeast Interior

Northeast Interior

Northeast Interior is off the beaten path and off the road system but contains two Alaska treasures. The community of Fort Yukon is one of the older settlements in Alaska and remains the largest primarily Athabascan village in Alaska. An interesting and historical village, Fort Yukon sits on the Yukon River and is just north of the Arctic Circle. The town provides some of the best northern lights viewing from September through April and is the jumping off point for river trips on the Yukon River and adventures into Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the north.

The mighty Yukon River cuts through the Northeast Interior region, traveling almost 2,000 miles from its headwaters in British Columbia and bisecting the entire state of Alaska before emptying into the Bering Sea in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta and Southwest Alaska. Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve and Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge border the Yukon River in the Northeast Interior, providing access to the river for float trips and other backcountry outdoor recreation opportunities.
