What better window into a community than its food? Most of Alaska's major cities offer culinary tours that give you a tasty window into local culture and creativity. You can't buy meat from wild game like bear or moose, but the tours sometimes include Alaska-raised meats like elk, yak, bison and reindeer (domesticated caribou), along with produce from local farmers. And of course there's always plenty of fresh seafood just off the boat. If you don't feel like taking a tour, Alaska also boasts a number of world-class chefs that offer cooking classes, and most local breweries and wineries offer tours that include a sampling of their products.
