Eating in Alaska

Are you a fan of the local food movement? Then you'll love sitting down in one of Alaska's seafood restaurants, which range from fine dining to lick-your-fingers casual. It doesn't get any fresher than salmon, halibut, cod, rockfish or crab that just came off the boat that morning. If you prefer street food, reindeer sausage is a particular favorite with food vendors all over the state.

Meanwhile, Alaska farmers’ markets are booming with enormous, dinosaur-sized local produce, served with a side of live music, ready-to-eat food and local artwork. Microbreweries are also extremely popular here, producing everything from beer to hard ciders, with an ever-growing roster of local ingredients. And if you prefer ethnic food, Alaska's incredibly diverse population means you can sample cuisine from all over the world, especially in the big cities.

The best show in Alaska is undoubtedly the northern lights, which are only visible when the sky is clear and dark. Late August through April are the best months to see them. If you're here in the summer, the night sky is usually too bright for you to see the aurora overhead—but you can enjoy another type of nightlife by exploring Alaska's brimming arts and culture scene. The cities are overflowing with live music, theater offerings that range from on-the-spot improv to Shakespeare and dance opportunities from Argentine tango to swing and contra dancing. If you're a fan of the bar scene, some of Alaska's most iconic and colorful establishments are exactly that.
