Local Visitors Centers in Alaska
Visitors Centers
Alaska is incredibly diverse. One great way to take a deeper dive and find out more is to ask a local — and discover your own authentic Alaska. Local convention and visitors bureaus and chambers of commerce can be found in communities across the state. Request a print or digital Official State Vacation Planner before your trip and, while you're here, stop by a visitors center where knowledgeable staff will give you insider tips on the best hiking spots, restaurants, museums, and more. To find out more about Alaska’s state and national public lands, visit one of the Alaska Public Lands Information Centers in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Ketchikan, or Tok.

The true Last Frontier can be found when exploring Tongass National Forest. This spectacular terrain is the nation’s largest national forest and spans across more than 500 miles of Southeast Alaska. Tongass offers locals and visitors a chance to experience breathtaking views, while also providing unique chances to view eagles, bears, and spawning salmon.

Had a sweet visitor at the cozy cabin last evening!
As I was getting ready for work I let our dog out. I was in the kitchen packing my lunch when I heard Lila Ann bark. I instantly ran to the front door and called her in as I knew something was up, right in that moment I seen this beautiful cow moose come from the trees.
With pure excitement I grabbed my camera and began grabbing photos. This is my first encounter with seeing a moose while at the cabin. I've seen plenty of sign but this right here made my day, my week and quite possibly my year!
This is what dreams are made of. My heart is so happy! ♡

A great way to learn about the history and culture of Alaska is by visiting the Alaska Native Heritage Center (ANHC). This wonderful facility is the perfect place for families to learn about Alaska's indigenous people. #TravelAlaskaChat #Alaska #Culture #History #travel

Almost every community in Alaska has some sort of cultural center dedicated to showcasing—and nurturing—the unique Alaska Native culture in that region of the state. But if you can only visit one such center, make it the Alaska Native Heritage Center in northeast Anchorage. This enormous center pools information on each of the five distinct cultural regions throughout the state, with performances of traditional dancing, videos, and guided tours through life-size recreations of Alaska Native village sites (you can also walk through the sites on your own).⠀

From the other side of the Turnagain Arm in Hope, Alaska, you can see tiny cars making their way up and down the Seward Highway. Often considered the prettiest drive in South-central Alaska (perhaps even in all of Alaska), cruising the Seward Highway is a must for any visitor. 🏔🚙⚠️⠀
•⠀
If you’re planning to travel on this road anytime soon, my only advice is to keep your eyes peeled and stay safe! This road is host to many different hazards, including wildlife (moose), construction zones,… and crazy drivers.⠀

TBT. Back to a misty fall morning exploring Denali NP. It would make a better story to say we stumbled across these antlers while hiking a well-worn game trail .... but in truth, they were part of a display outside a visitors center. But still pretty cool. #thelastfrontier #alaska #denali #autumninalaska #denalinationalpark

PUPDATE! A 2-week-old sea otter pup was admitted to our Wildlife Response Program on November 12. The male pup was noticed vocalizing for quite some time near the water’s edge in Homer, Alaska. When the tide came in, he ended up high and dry on the shore. His dire condition and lack of nearby otters spurred ASLC volunteers to pick him up and transport him to the Center with USFWS permission.
After a few weeks of providing round-the-clock care for this pup, the staff is cautiously optimistic about his condition. “He is proving to be a very independent pup. He has been exploring his pools extensively and is already taking really good care of his coat,” states Veterinary Assistant Specialist, Hanna Sundstrom. Next steps will be to get him eating more solid food like clam and encourage him to swim and dive in a larger pool.

Take an Alaska railroad tour to witness an exceptional view into Alaska's backcountry "soul." Alaska railroad vacation packages and train tours bring visitors to places which can only be accessible by train, through awe-inspiring landscapes and to some of the state's most colorful communities. I'd love to help you plan your trip, so be sure to call/email me.

A few shots from our trip to Utqiagvik, the northernmost city in the United States. As we were walking along the street, we were invited to join a blessing service for the whaling crews about to head out. We listened to the elders give advice and tried to sing along to hymns in Inupiak. The bowhead whale is front and center in the community with skeletal remains everywhere a life-size display in the Inupiat Heritage Center, which I highly recommend if you get the chance to visit. I would love to spend more time in this fascinating place!

✨Working on my print shop this week✨
I can't wait to scatter some of my photos around town for visitors to take back home with them. I can't believe I get to live where people vacation!!

Did you know one of the first buildings built in Wasilla was the train station?
It was 1917. Knik was the transport and supply hub for the area since the 1880’s. With the construction of the railroad, Wasilla grew fast. A government land auction surrounding Wasilla also took place in 1917. The convenient location to gold mines also made Wasilla appealing. A school was built that same year.
The original train depot still stands and is the current wasillachamberofcommerce and Visitors Center. The building is still full of fascinating images and equipment. Well worth stopping and browsing the historical items and seeing this gem of a building. It was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Alaska National Parks Week, Day 3
⠀
Today I’m showcasing the largest national park in the United States: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park! To give you an idea of the size of the park, it is 6x larger than Yellowstone, and is larger than Costa Rick, Switzerland, or the Netherlands!
⠀⠀
Wrangell-St. Elias is one of only 3 national parks in Alaska which is accessible by car to the rest of the state. (A small part of Glacier Bay National Park can be reached by car, but you have to take a ferry to get there).
⠀⠀
The park is part of the much larger Kluane / Wrangell-St. Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek UNESCO World Heritage Site which extends into British Columbia and the Yukon. This region is the largest non-polar ice field in the world.
⠀⠀
The St. Elias mountain range which is in the park has some of the highest peaks in North America, including Mount St. Elias, the second highest peak in North America at 18,008 feet (5,489 m).
⠀⠀
The heart of the park is the small town of McCarthy, Alaska (population 28). It was established in the early 20th Century during the mining boom in the nearby town of Kennicott, which housed one of the world’s largest copper mines. ⠀⠀
The mine was in operation until the 1960s, and then it was abandoned. The remains of the mine and the town are still there today and can be toured during your visit.
⠀⠀
Despite being accessible by road, Wrangell-St. Elias only gets about 1/10 the visitors of Denali. ⠀⠀
Wrangell-St. Elias might be my favorite national park in Alaska. The scenery is amazing, and unlike the other Alaskan national parks, it has a historical component which can be visited as well.

Denali Sunrise
Only about 30% of visitors to Denali National Park are usually able to see its namesake – Denali, formerly known as Mt. McKinley – the highest mountain in the United States (and North America), at 20,310 feet. I count myself very lucky that, after having to deal with bus difficulties caused by a massive landslide during my visit, I made it to Wonder Lake Campground and awoke on the morning of August 9, 2016, with a stunningly clear view of this majestic peak. A few hours later, when the Park's first buses began to make it to the part of the park from which one can view the mountain, clouds had already poured in and obscured the view. Sometimes, all the planning in the world doesn't quite compare with a bit of good luck!

Day 8/10 Travel: Alaska Native Heritage Centre. We covered mountains, sea, wildlife, so we had to cover culture and the people of the place. Had a wonderful learning trip to the Native Heritage Center, learning about their history, lives, dance, and housing!

Dogs were first domesticated over 10,000 years ago and since then, they have been considered man’s best friend. There are millions of dogs all over the world that serve as companions to people as their pets. There are also dogs all over the world that do important and specific jobs.
One of those jobs is pulling dog sleds.
Dogsledding originated around 1000 A.D. in Northern Canada with the native Inuit people and it spread to other areas of the world after that. It started out with one dog pulling smaller sleds until people learned how to teach dog teams to work together. While many people used horses, dogs were better equipped to handle the cold harsh conditions.
There are now sled races to commemorate the important role that these sled dogs have played in these cold environments. The Iditarod is one of the most famous, but it is not the only one. Traveling by dogsled is something that visitors to Alaska can do in order to appreciate these animals and their hard work.
If dog sledding through Alaska is one of your bucket list items, we can make it happen.
