Glacier Bay Area
Sixteen spectacular glaciers flow from surrounding mountains into the waters of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. With its abundant wildlife and tidewater glaciers, Glacier Bay National Park is one of the top destinations on cruise ship itineraries that explore Alaska’s Inside Passage.
Independent travelers can access Glacier Bay from the nearby town of Gustavus. This charming village has visitor services, lodges and guest houses, restaurants, art galleries, and tour operators that lead kayaking, flightseeing, wildlife viewing, fishing, and boat tours.
Nine miles from Gustavus is Bartlett Cove, home to the Glacier Bay National Park Headquarters where visitors can book day tours, join a ranger-led hike, and get backcountry permits and other information. Bartlett Cove is the jumping off point for kayak and boat trips into Glacier Bay and includes a tent-only campground, a lodge with a restaurant and bar, and access to the only established hiking trails in the park.

Whale watching in Alaska sure is fun and exciting, not to mention accessible too. It's only a day cruise away so you can surely find orcas, humpbacks, grays, or beluga whales. Enjoy the sights of marine wildlife with whale watching from Seward in Kenai Fjords National Park.
Orcas live in the waters surrounding coastal Alaska, including outside Seward, near Kodiak, in Whittier's Prince William Sound, in Glacier Bay, Icy Strait, and Alaska's Inside Passage.
Come spring, gray whales migrate through Alaska's waterways on their way to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas in the Arctic Ocean. Spot some belugas outside Anchorage in the Turnagain Arm, and humpbacks are easy to see outside of Juneau. Alaska National Parks Week, Day 3

Today I’m showcasing the largest national park in the United States: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park! To give you an idea of the size of the park, it is 6x larger than Yellowstone, and is larger than Costa Rick, Switzerland, or the Netherlands!
⠀⠀
Wrangell-St. Elias is one of only 3 national parks in Alaska which is accessible by car to the rest of the state. (A small part of Glacier Bay National Park can be reached by car, but you have to take a ferry to get there).
⠀⠀
The park is part of the much larger Kluane / Wrangell-St. Elias / Glacier Bay / Tatshenshini-Alsek UNESCO World Heritage Site which extends into British Columbia and the Yukon. This region is the largest non-polar ice field in the world.

The St. Elias mountain range which is in the park has some of the highest peaks in North America, including Mount St. Elias, the second highest peak in North America at 18,008 feet (5,489 m).
⠀⠀
The heart of the park is the small town of McCarthy, Alaska (population 28). It was established in the early 20th Century during the mining boom in the nearby town of Kennicott, which housed one of the world’s largest copper mines. ⠀⠀
The mine was in operation until the 1960s, and then it was abandoned. The remains of the mine and the town are still there today and can be toured during your visit.

Despite being accessible by road, Wrangell-St. Elias only gets about 1/10 the visitors of Denali. ⠀⠀
Wrangell-St. Elias might be my favorite national park in Alaska. The scenery is amazing, and unlike the other Alaskan national parks, it has a historical component which can be visited as well.

Save for future planning 📌
There are 8 National Parks in Alaska but only 3 of them are accessible via car(Denali, Kenai Fjords and Wrangell St. Elias). I visited these three parks first on my journey over the years, then I ventured more into the more difficult(and expensive) parks!
The national parks I list below are more remote and only reachable via small plane or boat. This guide will help with your planning.
📍Gates of the Arctic- The most draw dropping peaks I’ve witnessed to date. You can opt to do a day trip with Golden Eagle Outfitters from Fairbanks or backpack in, but backpacking will require extensive research and planning as well as great navigational skills as there are no maintained trails here(or cell service)
📍Kobuk Valley- Often combine with Gates of the Arctic flight, it’s most known for the expansive sand dunes . The sand was ground down by glaciers, then carried here by wind and water after the last Ice Age.
📍Katmai- This park offers such a unique experience of being surrounded by bears and watching them at Brooks falls. The best time to go is end July-September. You can take a water taxi or fly from Anchorage to the small port town of King Salmon with Ravn Air and then King Salmon to Brooks Camp with Katmai Air. HIGHLY recommend making reservations in advance at Brooks Lodge or applying for Brooks Camp camping permit on Recreation.gov We won a camping permit last year and so glad we did, as the bears are most active at the falls late in the day as planes leave. Staying more than the day trip allows you to explore more at Katmai as well. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes is an other worldly landscape and such an interesting part of Alaskas history and landscape.
📍Lake Clark- Accessible via Lake and Pen Air from Anchorage to Port Alsworth. I recommend atleast 1 night if not 2 or 3. From there are trailheads for Tanalian Mountain and falls as well as water activities available at Tulchina adventures and wilderness pro lodge .
📍Glacier Bay- This is your chance to see glaciers and tons of wildlife. Often visited by cruise ship, you can also fly into the small town of Gustavus. There is camping as well as Glacier Bay Lodge.
Kayaking through Glacier Bay National Park had been a dream trip of mine for years. This summer a group of friends and I made it happen and the experience was as incredible as I had hoped. This night in particular really made all the hours of meticulous planning and back breaking paddling worth it!

Back in September 2016 we took a norwegiancruiseline cruise to Alaska! It was a last minute booking that I will always look back on fondly. The food was tasty, the staff was friendly and most importantly the sights were magical. We had an aft end room that afforded us the perfect viewing spot once in Glacier Bay. Isla may not remember how perfectly plump, golden blond and squishy she was but I will! Graham may not remember seeing humpback whales swim by and stopping to watch them but I will! The kids may forget the sound of the glaciers calving but I have videos to remind them. 🤣 It was one of those family “trips” that is actually a vacation for everyone.
