Fish the Legendary Kenai River

The city of Kenai is an angler’s dream. It’s situated on the river of the same name, often referred to as one of the greatest sport fishing rivers in the world. The Kenai River salmon fishery draws Alaskans from all over by the thousands. Fly-fishers gather on the shore to reel in the big one that they hope will make them the envy of every other angler on the water. In the lower Kenai River and at its mouth, fishers can catch world-class salmon throughout the summer. Cast a line for king salmon, red (or sockeye) salmon, silver (or Coho) salmon and pink salmon. Most fishing charters in Kenai focus on the river, even offering travelers float trips to reach the best spots to cast a line. The prime target? The giant Kenai king salmon that can sometimes weigh 70 pounds or more! That’s more than enough to stock a freezer.

Even travelers who don’t want to try for a fish can enjoy a trip to the river and watch the waters for salmon as they work their way upstream to spawn.
