Inside Passage Community: Elfin Cove
Learn More About Alaska's Inside Passage
Elfin Cove, uniquely situated on Cross Sound, is renowned for good fishing and as enchanting as its name. The cove is protected from wide-open ocean by several islands of historical interest from World War II. There is spectacular scenery with a view of the Fairweather Range and Brady Glacier looming above the waters of the sound. Elfin Cove’s protected, flask-shaped harbor was originally called ‘Gunkhole,’ meaning safe, quiet anchorage. With its proximity to the fishing grounds, it became a natural spot for fish buyers and a supply point for fishermen. Ernie Swanson began buying fish here in the late 1920s and was instrumental in establishing the community. When his wife Ruth applied for a post office in 1936, she gave it the new name of Elfin Cove, saying that at times the inner harbor was so still and misty that one could imagine little elves running around. John Lowell, another fish buyer, arrived in the 1940s and built a second dock, a warehouse, store and restaurant.
Boardwalks and trails connect everything at Elfin Cove. Most structures are multilevel due to the scarcity of private land, and many structures are built on pilings over the water.
The community becomes active during the summer when local businesses serve the commercial fishing fleet and guests fill the sportfishing lodges. While most local people are fishermen or depend on the commercial fishing industry for a living, the area’s scenery, sportfishing and recreational opportunities are drawing an increasing number of visitors. There is year round bottom fish and halibut fishing as well as salmon fishing in season. Kayaking the protected waters is popular along with viewing the abundant wildlife, hiking and beach combing. Glacier Bay National Park is an hour’s boat ride from Elvin Cove and Tongass National Forest is within walking distance. Port Althorp Bear Preserve, the Port Althorp Cannery site and the World War II cannon emplacement on George’s Island are all within 20 minutes by boat.
