Did You Know: Wild Alaska Facts
  • The state record for largest halibut ever caught is 459 pounds by sport angler Jack Tragis. Tragis caught the marine monster in Unalaska Bay in 1996. The record for the biggest King salmon caught in Alaska is 97 pounds, 4 ounces. Sport fisherman Lester Anderson hooked the big one in the Kenai River in 1985.
  • The highest temperature recorded in the state of Alaska was in Fort Yukon in Alaska’s Interior on June 27, 1915; it was 100 degrees Fahrenheit. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s. The lowest temperature ever recorded was also in the Interior region, at Prospect Creek on January 23, 1971 — a whopping minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Interior Alaska experiences some of the widest seasonal swings in temperature anywhere on the planet.
  • Alaska has more pilots per capita than anywhere else in the nation. It’s estimated to have 16 times as many aircrafts per capita as the rest of the United States.
  • Alaska is home to more than 70 potentially active volcanoes, several of which have erupted in recent years. The 1912 eruption of Novarupta Volcano created the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, which is now part of Katmai National Park and a must-see when traveling in the Southwest region.
  • Seventeen out of the 20 highest peaks in the United States are in Alaska. Mount McKinley — the highest peak in North America — is 20,320 feet above sea level.
  • North America’s strongest earthquake was recorded on Good Friday, March 27, 1964, when a 9.2-magnitude quake struck the Southcentral region of the state. Alaska has approximately 5,000 earthquakes each year, though only a fraction of these measure above 3.5 on the Richter scale.
  • Alaskans love craft beers, and the state ranks number five in the nation for breweries per capita. There are a total of 16 breweries in the state. Cheers to that!
