WILLIAM T. KIRKPATRICK
We spent two weeks, Anchorage to Anchorage in a rental car enjoying Alaska. Started making reservations about six months out and found that some of the places we would have liked to have stayed (such as Talkeetna) were already booked. We stayed in hotels, motels, lodges and bed & breakfasts. All had their own flavor, but the bed & breakfasts and the opportunity to visit with "locals" were the best. Denali was fantastic. Definately recommend the 9 hour trip to Kantishna and a flight over the mountain (we flew from Talkeetna). From Fairbanks, the drive to Valdez is beautiful - wish we had allowed more time on the Copper River and in Valdez. Prince William Sound was the highlight of our trip - again we should have allowed more time. We spent one day on a boat tour out of Valdez (great face-to-face with glaciers) and one on the ferry across the Sound to Whittier. Faintly saw fourth of July fireworks in Seward, because it never got dark, but really enjoyed the local celebration and street party. Overall comment: three or even four weeks would have been better. Everywhere we went, we wanted to stay longer. If we can put in a plug for Enterprise - they gave us a great car at a very reasonable rate AND brought the car to us.
