My wife and I traveled to Alaska 8/25-9/4. Of course we had a great time- and the weather even cooperated (18 days straight days of rain before our arrival, and we had very little rain and many sunny days during our visit).Started off in Girdwood (Carriage Hills B&B, dinner at Double Musky)- saw Beluga whales on the drive. The next day went to the Portage Glacier, hiked Portage Pass (near Whittier) and did Phillip's 26 glacier cruise. Afterwords, drove to Seward. (Stayed at Windsong Lodge). While in area, hiked to Exit Glacier, Harding Icefield (saw black bear sow and cub on trail), rented a kayak at Sunny Cove/Miller's Landing, at Ray's in Seward. We then traveled towards Denali, stopping at Talkeetna on the way. Cool little town! Stayed at Trapper Creek Inn (overly rustic). Did Talkeetna Air Taxi Denali flightseeing trip, dinner at Mile High Pizza Pie.Continued to Denali NP. Stayed at The Perch (rustic, but good value). Hiked Horseshoe Lake and other entrance area trails. Ate at The Perch. Did first thing AM shuttle to Fish Creek. Saw an abundance of wildlife; multiple: moose, caribou, grizzly bear, Dall Sheep. Hiked at Tolkat River. Had a nice dinner at The Creekside. Climbed Mt. Healy trail.Went back to Talkeetna, stayed at Trapper Creek again. Had a good dinner at The West Rib in Talkeetna and wandered around the town.Headed back to Anchorage, stayed at Alaska Frontier Gardens B&B. Had dinner at Simon and Seaforts (very nice). Hung around town, shopped. Hiked/climbed Flattop mtn; was above the clouds and could see McKinley! Hung around Lake Hood/Millenium hotel until we had to head to the airport. A great trip!
It's been 26 years since I traveled to Alaska as a visitor because I stayed after my first visit in 1980. My husband and I fell in love so completely with Alaska that we stayed and lived there for more than 23 years. The only reason we moved back to Texas was to take care of my Mother who is elderly and ill. If there was any reasonably inexpensive way to move her to Alaska, we would have never left there. Alaska has the most beautiful landscapes, scenery, etc., but the one thing that made us fall in love with it was the people. We felt as if we had stepped back in time to the year when everybody loved their neighbors and helped them without asking. I'm sure this space isn't nearly big enough to tell you all the things we loved about Alaska, but if you will send me a letter of interest, I will write you a short story about "OUR ALASKA". Thank you, LaPrincess & Edward Halleck (formerly of the Fairbanks North Star Borough)
