Additional Resources

Alaska’s highways are modern and well-maintained. In most areas, traveler resources are plentiful. Driving in Alaska offers incredible scenery and wildlife viewing, and is a great way to get out and explore. Car and RV rentals are available in most communities.

Some of Alaska’s most popular destinations are primarily accessible by highway, including Denali National Park (you can also get there by train) and Denali State Park, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, to name a few.

Many of Alaska’s highways are recognized by the National Scenic Byways program. These roads are remarkable for their scenic, natural, historical and cultural qualities. Alaska has two All-American Roads, the highest level of federal recognition available. The first is the Seward Highway, which stretches from Anchorage to Seward in Southcentral Alaska.

The second is the entire route of the Alaska Marine Highway. It is the only marine route in the National Scenic Byways program. The Glenn Highway, which runs from Anchorage to Glennallen, also in Southcentral Alaska, is a National Scenic Byway.

Be sure to consult the State of Alaska Department of Transportation's 511.Alaska.gov site for road conditions and public access restrictions before you start your journey north.

Alaska also has several highways recognized through a comparable state program. They are:

  • The Dalton Highway, from Livengood to Prudhoe Bay in the Far North
  • The Steese Highway, from Fairbanks to Circle in Interior Alaska
  • The Taylor and Top of the World highways from near Tok to the Canadian border and Eagle, also in Interior Alaska
  • The Parks Highway from Wasilla to the entrance of Denali National Park
  • The Richardson Highway from Glennallen to Valdez in Prince William Sound
  • The Sterling Highway from Tern Lake to Homer on the Kenai Peninsula
  • The Haines Highway from Haines through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to the Canadian border
