Getting to Alaska by Road
Details
Mt. McKinley or "Denali" rises high in the background as RVs travel a highway near Trapper Creek
Driving is the Route to Freedom
Some 50 years ago, the Alaska Highway (ALCAN) got a reputation as a rugged route for hearty travelers. Today the road is fully paved and modernized - only the scenery remains wild. Towns and traveler services (campgrounds, hotels, restaurants, service stations, etc.) appear at frequent intervals. The highway is open year-round, although some businesses close for the winter.
