Additional Resources

Located on the Kenai Peninsula, 16 miles north of Homer and 62 miles south of Soldotna via the Sterling Highway, Anchor River is known for its popular fishing holes.

Activities

The main attraction at Anchor River State Recreation Area is fishing, notably for seasonal king and silver salmon and steelhead and rainbow. The Anchor River is Alaska’s only major steelhead stream accessible by road. Steelhead runs from late August to November and there is excellent fishing for sea-run Dollies in July and late summer. Silvers run in August. Fishing holes are located along a two-mile segment of the river between the Sterling Highway at Anchor Point and Cook Inlet. Access is from the 1.6-mile Anchor River Road west of the Old Sterling Highway.

Accommodations

There are five state campgrounds with a total of 116 campsites along Anchor River Road. All campsites offer picnic and tent sites and, with the exception of Halibut, day-use parking areas. Silver King Campground has 37 campsites, Coho has 28, Steelhead has 32, and Slidehole has 17. Halibut Campground has 24 campsites and offers a scenic view of the Aleutian Range. Overnight camping and parking fees are charged.

Access

Turn off Sterling Highway at Mile 156.9 onto Old Sterling Highway and continue over the Anchor River Bridge. Take the first right onto Anchor River Road.
