Ten miles northeast of Soldotna, sportfishing and outdoor recreation activities abound in the town of Sterling. It is a highway community with a number of businesses that accommodate anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Kenai and Moose Rivers intersect here and there are numerous camping and fishing opportunities at Alaska State Park recreation areas such as Morgan’s Landing, Scout Lake, and the Swanson River Canoe Trails.
Izaak Walton Recreation Site, just beyond the town, not only has camping sites but a display explaining the nearby archaeological site where excavations suggest the area was used by Inuit people 2,000 years ago. Izaak Walton is a popular site for anglers during salmon runs and also for paddlers enjoying the Swan Lake and Swanson River canoe trails.
