Kenny Lake was founded in the late 1950's with the Alaska Homestead Act. Good fertile soil was found there and many people homesteaded the area. Several of the original homesteads were eventually subdivided for residential use although there are still four original homesteaders farming their land. Kenny Lake is now home to several small businesses and provides services for visitors traveling the Edgerton Highway to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve.
You can fish for King and red salmon in the beautiful, fast flowing Klutina River or the serine, slow moving Gulkana River. Take a day trip to the end of the highway to visit the historic mining town of McCarthy and the ruins of the Kennecott Copper Mine. You can take flightseeing trips over the many glaciers in the Wrangell and Chugiak mountains. Take an airboat ride or a float trip. Try your hand at dog mushing or ice climbing, hike the many trails in the Copper Basin or go horseback riding with local outfitters.
The Kenny Lake Fair, held in August, is an enjoyable family event with games, food and craft booths, and local entertainment. The fair has been held every year since 1973.

Location: Kenny Lake lies off the Richardson Highway, at Mile 7.2 on the Edgerton Highway. It is along the preferred route into the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
Access: By road via the Richardson Highway to the Edgerton Highway.
Accommodations: Services in the Kenny Lake area include a service station, RV campground, cabin rentals and most services.
