MAY MY ALASKA NEWS

For adventurists, Alaska is one giant playground. Whether you’re a seasoned pro pushing the limits or an amateur testing the waters, Alaska has the terrain and activities to match your abilities. To access some of the state’s wildest places, think beyond the road system. Alaska offers fields of untouched powder and helicopter guides who drop skiers off at the top of mountains. There are breathtaking canyons and rushing rapids best experienced on a raft, paddle in hand. Travelers can set off on their own adventures by steering an ATV or snowmobile into the backcountry. One of the most unique ways to take in Alaska’s sights is strapped into a harness on a zipline or canopy tour. Read on to learn more about activities perfectly suited for thrill seekers looking to explore Alaska's wilderness.

Ziplines and Canopy Tours

Ziplines are one of the more fun ways to glimpse Alaska scenery, and will have you feeling like you're flying by the seat of your pants. On ziplines and canopy tours, participants are clipped into a harness attached to heavy-duty steel cables and glide from one platform to the next. It's one of the most exciting ways to see Alaska's wilderness. While ziplines zoom at a speed designed with thrill seekers in mind, canopy tours bring guests from platform to platform in the forest canopy at a more leisurely pace. Both are thrilling ways to take in terrain and wildlife.

Rafting

One of the best ways to soak in the Alaska sunshine is out on the water. While some travelers prefer to ride the rapids, others are just looking for some mellow drifting. A guided tour will help keep things as risky or relaxed as desired and make sure rafters have access to all the safety equipment and education needed. Participants are typically given dry suits and are sometimes allowed a quick swim to get acclimated to the cooler water temperature.

Heli-Skiing

Why wait in a chairlift line for tracked-up slopes when you can have your pick of untouched lines on a secluded mountain? Accessing off-trail terrain for skiing and snowboarding via helicopter (heli-skiing) isn’t just for pros in the movies — any intermediate rider with an adventurous streak can partake. Experienced guides lead heli-ski trips with a focus on safety and instruction. Riders are given safety briefings and routes are then chosen based on experience levels. Once airborne, guides scope the slopes for the best way down the mountain.

ATVs and snowmobiles

One of the best ways to get off the road and into the natural wilderness of the Last Frontier is on an all-terrain vehicle or snowmobile. Whether it’s on a sled (a local’s term for snowmobiles) in winter, or an ATV in the summer, experienced guides help riders get oriented and comfortable on their machines before they set off for the backcountry. Most visitors relish the chance to steer their own path, but several touring companies also feature two-seated ATVs for children or travelers who would rather let someone else do the driving and just go along for the ride. On tires or a track, the chance to explore off the beaten path makes this one of the more memorable Alaska activities.
