EXPERIENCE ALASKA "AS SEEN ON TV"
Flip to just about any TV channel these days and it's hard to miss a show about Alaska. The cable networks are filled to the brim with made-for-TV depictions of Alaskans at work and at play in some of the nation's most awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping and straight-up gorgeous backdrops. Call it luck, timing, kismet or just plain random, it seems Alaska is enjoying its proverbial 15 minutes of fame (although like everything associated with the biggest state in the Union, our fame allotment is a little more substantial than 15 minutes). Whatever the reason, more and more visitors are seeking out experiences in Alaska that replicate what they've seen on TV. They want to meet the characters and visit the locations featured in their favorite shows, and there are now plenty of tour options designed to deliver those experiences. Read on for more information on creating your own "As Seen on TV" Alaska experience.

Experience the “Deadliest Catch” – and live to tell!

From its first episode back in 2005, the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” has been a runaway hit, inspiring thousands of armchair adventurers with the unforgiving conditions and high stakes of crab fishing in the Bering Sea. What was once an obscure industry made superstars out of the rough-and-ready crew members of several Bering Sea vessels and put the home base of these commercial fishing operators, Dutch Harbor, in the spotlight. Located in the Aleutian Chain, the twin communities of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor are home not just to the crabbing fleet but also feature huge and valuable halibut, pollock, salmon, rockfish and cod fisheries.

See Alaska’s Far North from the perspective of the History Channel’s “Ice Road Truckers”

With four seasons under its belt, this popular History Channel program hit its stride in season three when it moved from Canada’s northernmost highways to feature the infamous “Haul Road” in Alaska. Officially called the Dalton Highway, the 400-mile road connects Fairbanks, in Alaska’s Interior, with Prudhoe Bay and the oil fields of Alaska’s North Slope. Known for its treacherous driving conditions, temperatures as low as 70 degrees below zero, and few passing motorists to lend a hand if you needed it, the Haul Road is one of Alaska’s most legendary roadways. Few visitors ever experience this challenging wintery drive (and many wouldn’t want to), but new tour options allow summer visitors to get a sense of what life is like for the truckers who travel this rugged road.

Experience what it really means to be “off the grid” with Discovery Channel’s “Flying Wild Alaska”

America was introduced to the Tweto family in January of 2011 on Discovery’s latest addition to its Alaska lineup, “Flying Wild Alaska.” The show chronicles the adventures and challenges faced by a family making its living in one of the state’s most iconic professions. (Alaska has six times as many pilots per capita as the rest of the United States, and 14 times as many airplanes.)

Experience the lifestyle of Alaska’s most famous resident a la “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”

Love her or hate her, there’s no question TLC’s show about Sarah Palin’s life and family shows off Alaska at its picturesque best. The one-season wonder on TLC included some of the most exciting and visitor-friendly depictions of rugged Last Frontier experiences, many of which are tailor-made for families. During its eight episodes, viewers saw the Palins fishing, bear viewing, mountain climbing, flightseeing and otherwise enjoying Alaska’s great outdoors.
