For those that choose to see Alaska by road, there are many excellent campgrounds in which to spend the night. Camping out offers an affordable alternative to staying in hotels and most campgrounds feature full facilities, excellent scenery and a natural setting. Campground hosts are friendly and knowledgeable, and can point you toward some of the best back-road scenic drives, quiet hideaways and local attractions.

For tent campers and RVers alike, state and national parks, national forests and other public lands offer the true backcountry experience in carefully managed campgrounds. Campgrounds may require reservations, so it is helpful to do your research before leaving home. Campgrounds usually have common restroom facilities, and some even offer showers. Others have vendors nearby for renting kayaks, mountain bikes, canoes or other outdoor equipment. Reserving a place to roll out your sleeping bag under the vast Alaska sky is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
