Chatanika State Recreation Areas
North of Fairbanks there are two state recreation areas overlooking the Chatanika River. Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area consists of 570 acres along the Elliott Highway; farther north on the Steese Highway is the 73-acre Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site.
Popular activities at the two parks include camping, fishing, rafting, canoeing and picnicking. Canoers and rafters launch their boats from a gravel bar reached from a road in Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site for an all-day float on the Chatanika River, ending at Lower Chatanika State Recreational Area.
