Chatanika State Recreation Areas
North of Fairbanks there are two state recreation areas overlooking the Chatanika River. Lower Chatanika State Recreation Area consists of 570-acres along the Elliott Highway while further north on the Steese Highway is the 73-acre Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site.
Activities popular at the two parks are camping, fishing, rafting, canoeing and picnicking. Canoers and rafters launch their boats from a gravel bar reached from a road in Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site for an all-day-float on the Chatanika River, ending at Lower Chatanika State Recreational Area.
