Fishing in the Far North is primarily accessible by air, although riverboats can occasionally be rented at villages along the waterways. Lakes in the Brooks Range are the most popular; beware if you are traveling to one of these, they may not be ice free until as late as July.

Alaska Department of Fish & Game regional sport fish run times

Good Fishing Locations:
  • Anaktuvuk River - Located in the Brooks Range in Gates of the Arctic National Park near Anaktuvuk Pass. At its best in September.
  • Kobuk River - Located in Gates of the Arctic National Park and flows to Kotzebue. Boats may be chartered from residents in villages along the river. At its best June 1 – September 15, Northern Pike available year round.
  • Noatak River - Fly in river flows through Gates of the Arctic National Park and Noatak National Preserve to Kotzebue. Approximate season July 15 through September 30.
  • Round Lake - Fly in lake located on the North Slope of the Brooks Range.
Managed Areas:
  • Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim
