I took a 7 day cruise/6 days on land package with some friends last week of August/first week of September. There are not enough adjectives in the English language to describe it! If, no when, I come back, it will be srtictly on land. I'm a RN, and I'd like to come and do a few week stint in the clinic in Denali. The mountains are AWESOME! I went on a salmon fishing trip--caught a 28" salmon, went on a river rafting trip, saw some brown bears on a nature trip in Skagway, but the coolest thing I did was to go on a helicopter trip onto one of the glaciers. Talkeetna is a great little town, actually all of our stops were great. The people are very friendly and helpful, but the landscape is the best thing.
My wife and I took the Holland America cruise to Juneau from Seattle the last week of July this year. I was spellbound. The scenery is so different from any other place we have been. The excursions were the best, and all areas so clean. We enjoyed the Mt. Roberts Tram in Jueau, and the hiking around the area, a great way to be one with the nature. The floatplane trips were beautiful, giving a glimpse of the mountains, lakes and glaciers up close. Everybody I have talked to before and after the trip all say the same thing...nothing like it anywhere. The weather was better than what I expected, with most days needing only a tshirt and jeans. On the water a lite coat was plenty. A good time of the year to experience Alaska.
