Bicycle Tours & Rentals

Exploring Alaska by bicycle is one of the best ways to get a close-up appreciation for the adventure and beauty the state offers. It’s also a good way to get around town when you’re on a budget. Adventuresome riders will find ample highway and backcountry trails to explore alone or with a tour. Budget-minded travelers needing urban transportation will find several rental companies willing to lend a hand.

A family biking the dirt roads of Denali National Park

Backcountry bike tours in Alaska are challenging and fun. Some feature dirt roads with little motorized traffic, like bike tours of Alaska’s Denali Highway, a 130-mile dirt road from Denali National Park to Paxson, Alaska in the shadow of the Alaska Range. Bike tours oriented around themes like the Gold Rush or Alaska Native heritage are also available. Backcountry tours offer a way to cover a lot of ground in a vast wilderness territory.

Bike rentals in town can be just as scenic, as well as practical. Urban trails like the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail in Anchorage offer a long, scenic ride along Cook Inlet with easy access to downtown Anchorage. Smaller towns are fun to explore by bike because you see more than when you’re riding in a car or bus. Exploring Alaska on two wheels is definitely worth the energy expended – and it means you’ll suffer no guilt when you visit the delicious salmon bakes found in most Alaska towns.
